Haymaker was approached by Christianity Today to work on the rebrand of Russell Moore's podcast.

One, if not the, most important evangelical voices in America, Moore just shifted from his position with the Southern Baptist Seminary and Convention and headed to Christianity Today. That also meant a move with his podcast.

Haymaker came up with two options on the rebrand of the ‘Russell Moore Podcast’ on Christianity Today’s network. Both are stark shifts from its current branding and hopefully a breath of fresh air for the brand.

Within those options was a more minimal and simple design to go along with the CT teams initial inspiration pieces sent for the first one and a more creative and design heavy look that is broadly different than other podcasts in this space.

The Concepts

Over the years, Russell Moore has been one of the leading evangelical voices in the country, taking on faith, political, and social issues in the name of Jesus and faith.

His one voice has shaped policies, decisions, and the direction of the church. He has done is unashamedly and without fear.

This is a simple design that not only represents that booming singular voice, but how he brings music and culture into not only his everyday, but also into his podcast with “The Church and the Jukebox” segments and episodes.

Within the design are the echos of his voice that reach out. On the third boom, there is a record that represents his love of music and his ability to reach common people. To tie it all together, there is a line that comes from the first boom all of the way to the record. That line represents his record on speaking truth, honesty, and biblically...talking straight and standing by his convictions.

Building on the same thoughts as we did in Option 1, I took it another step further and questioned what two things represent Russell Moore and can be brought together to create something a little different and unique?

I wanted to see if I could connect a book and a record player in a 3D illustrated piece that would definitely set his podcast up to be different from the rest in his space and hopefully work in a way that the art made you go directly to a Russell Moore podcast, similar to what has been done with ‘The Rise and Fall of Mars Hill’ podcast.

I chose subtle colors as to not overcomplicate the look and stayed away from the red, white, and blue look of his current podcast branding.

Why the book and the record player? As I researched Dr. Moore’s podcast, I saw comments of people that loved his ‘The Cross and the Jukebox’ segments, including everyone from The Eagles to Vampire Weekend. But following Dr. Moore on social media for years, he is never shy to tweet about his love of music and his favorite bands. Instead of a headshot or a evangelical symbol, I decided to create something that truly represented him as an educator and music lover.

We were super happy with the pick and the result. It takes a minimal and simple design and makes it meaningful with layers. We feel it plays into Dr. Moore's brand well and can last.
